Sneezing, nasal congestion, eye irritation, for some of us hay fever can make the summer months unbearable. Caused by an allergy to pollen, unfortunately, it can’t be cured, instead, it has to be managed. Luckily, though, there are a few actions that sufferers can do to alleviate the symptoms so hay fever doesn’t stop you in your tracks.

Hay fever can be easier to control if you try to figure out what exactly it’s caused by. As it’s triggered by inhaling airborne particles, such as pollen, it’s advised to check the pollen count each morning so that you can be prepared and manage the symptoms more effectively.

It’s not always easy, but for hay fever sufferers, it’s best to stay indoors during the early morning.  The pollen count is highest between 5am and 10am and remaining inside during this time will help stave off some of the nasty symptoms.

When outside, your clothes can collect pollen and make your symptoms persist when indoors. Simply changing and washing your clothes can be an effortless trick to reduce or stop any irritation. Just like clothes, fur can also carry pollen into your house, therefore, during the summer months, it’s advisable to keep pets outdoors and wash their fur regularly.

 

  1. Avoid certain foods and drinks

Certain foods and drinks can exacerbate hay fever symptoms for some sufferers too. Removing bananas and tomatoes from your diet, as well as alcohol, which contains histamine, can be a small change that can help manage your symptoms.

 

  1. Shower after going outside and before bed

After spending time outside, it’s inevitable that your skin and hair will pick up pollen that causes irritation. Simply having a shower after going outside and before bed will remove any pollen from your body and reduce the symptoms you’re experiencing.

For many, antihistamines and nasal sprays can provide great relief from hay fever. Found commonly in pharmacies, antihistamines can inhibit the symptoms while nasal sprays can coat the inside of your nose and stopping a reaction with pollen helping you keep hay fever at bay.
